Northeast Hope for Haiti

People of the Northeast United States serving the people of Haiti

Our mission is to improve the health of the people living in the greater Petite Rivière de l'Artibonite region of Haiti.

On January 12, 2010, Haiti was hit with a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that devastated the Caribbean country. Detailed reports of just how severe the destruction was motivated a group of doctors & nurses from North Country, NY to go to the people of Haiti and help as best they could. Under the sponsorship of New Hope Baptist Church in Watertown, New York the team traveled to Haiti and set up desperately needed health clinics. During that week, the team cared for 2,643 people.

The work that was accomplished and the destruction that was witnessed left it’s mark on each and every member of the team. It was decided to form a nonprofit organization to continue serving the people of Haiti. Northeast Hope for Haiti is an all volunteer team made up of doctors, pastors, deacons, nurses, construction workers, homemakers, etc. Through the efforts of Dr. Walter Dodard, a native of Haiti, we have a permanent base of operations in the village of L’Artibonite.

Strength, love, courage and grace; those are just a few of the words that come to mind when we think of the beloved matriarch of our family, Thermilia Dodard. She has touched countless lives in her 93 years on this earth and we celebrate a life well lived.

Thermilia Dodard

Thermilia was born on April 25, 1925 in Petite Rivere de l’Artibonite (Haiti) to Themistoc and Avenia Renelique. She attended school at Notre Dame de Fatima. Thermilia married Laborde Dodard and gave birth to 11 children, three of whom predeceased them. In 1970, Thermilia migrated to the United States where she strived & worked tirelessly to bring her husband and children to the U.S. She worked as a Nurse’s Assistant and retired at 70 years old. She was a loving, caring and dedicated mother & grandmother who strongly believed in helping others and instilled in her family the importance of education. She loved to tell jokes, give words of wisdom, dance, laugh, attend church and prepare home cooked meals for anyone who wanted to eat. She had the capacity to reach out to and connect with everyone.  She was a peace keeper.

Thermilia is survived by her 8 children and their spouses Fugere Dodard (Jacqueline), Rosemond Dodard (Marie Carmel), Daniel Dodard (Marie Elsie), Paula (Dodard) Calixte(Thony), Venette (Dodard) Toussaint, Berne Dodard (Nanouse), Laborde Dodard (Irnelle), Dr. Walter Dodard (Berline) and 25 grandchildren, more than 20 great- grandchildren & one brother, Luc Rosemond Renelique and many nieces and nephews.

Thermilia’s legacy of love, compassion and hard work will forever live on in our hearts.
